A Boston-area couple missing on Mount Everest following the devastating earthquake is safe, Tufts Medical Center confirms.
Thirty-seven-year-old Carol Pineda, a pediatrician at Tufts Medical Center's Floating Hospital for Children, and 38-year-old Michael MacDonald, an attorney originally from Brockton, had planned on hiking to the base camp at Mount Everest around the same time the earthquake hit, setting off a series of avalanches.
The Boston Globe reports family members were notified Sunday night by the trekking company the couple was with that they were safe.
The hospital says according to a post on Pineda's Faceboko page, she and her husband are safe in a village called Namche Bazar.
The death toll has soared above 3,600 as rescue crews continue to dig through rubble to reach survivors and victims.
Meanwhile, members of Boston's Nepali community gathered at Copley Square Sunday evening. Hundreds came together at a candlelight vigil to pray for the victims and survivors.
