Reservoir Closed Due to Harmful Algae

All human contact and animal contact is restricted until further notice because of blue-green algae and the toxins that algae produce.

Massachusetts officials have closed another popular body of water in Brookline due to algae concerns.

It was just last week blue-green algae at Jamaica Pond caused officials to close all water activities. Now the same problem has arisen at the Brookline Reservoir.

All human contact and animal contact is restricted until further notice because of blue-green algae and the toxins that algae produce.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health did testing and it appears this reservoir is experiencing a harmful algae bloom.

Blooms like this can make people and pets sick.

People are no longer allowed to fish, swim, go boating or allow their dogs in the water.

Contact can cause irritation to the skin and eyes and even respiratory irritation if the water is taken into the lungs. It can also cause major gastrointestinal problems like vomiting and diarrhea.

In the worst cases these toxins can affect the functioning of the liver, kidneys and even cause neurological problems.

Mass DPH will continue to do weekly water testing in this reservoir will be off-limits until those tests come back with toxin levels in the safe range.
