Lawmakers are weighing revisions to a bill that would expand protections for transgender people in public places, including restrooms, in Massachusetts.
A redrafted version of a bill originally filed in the House could be an effort to address concerns that have been raised by critics who say the safety and privacy of women and children in bathrooms or locker rooms could be compromised if the measure became law
The revised bill, made available to the Associated Press Friday by a House official, includes new language that would allow legal action against anyone who "asserts gender identity for an improper purpose."
The bill would allow transgender people to use public accommodations corresponding to their gender identity.
House Speaker Robert DeLeo says the revisions strengthen the bill. The new language is not in a separate Senate version.
