Authorities say an East Providence, Rhode Island, woman had just delivered a Mother's Day gift when she was stabbed to death by an ex-boyfriend.
Police say 42-year-old Christine Santurri was returning to her apartment after visiting her mother Sunday when Yuland Stanfield attacked her in front of her 21-year-old daughter.
Chief Christopher Parella says Stanfield stabbed Santurri multiple times before fleeing with the knife.
Stanfield led police on a half-mile chase through the woods before he was apprehended after being stuck in thick mud.
Parella says the 42-year old mother of three and grandmother of one was in the process of filing a restraining order against Stanfield.
Stanfield is in custody and it's unclear if he has a lawyer.
Santurri's death was the city's first homicide of the year.
