Mass. Town Buries Beached Pilot Whale

A pilot whale that died after beaching itself in Rockport, Massachusetts, has been buried in the town's makeshift cemetery for beached marine animals.

The Gloucester Times reports that town harbormasters received a permit Monday from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency to dispose of the whale, which died Sunday on Front Beach.

The incoming tide and high waves prevented the mammal from returning to sea.

A Department of Public Works employee transported the whale's carcass from the beach to the burial site, located at the end of a parking lot on Seaview Street.

The whale was interred along with a fin whale that washed up on Cape Hedge Beach in 2012 and two seals that also died over the past few years.
