Cranberry Truck Crash Closes Sagamore Bridge; 1 Seriously Injured

The Sagamore Bridge in Bourne, Massachusetts was closed for about two hours on Friday morning after a head-on crash between a box truck and a pickup truck hauling a trailer filled with cranberries.

Bourne Police said the accident occurred around 6:30 a.m. in the area of the Sagamore Bridge, spilling cranberries all over the roadway and blocking travel in either direction on the bridge.

The operator of the box truck, a 42-year-old man from Beverly, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. The driver of the pickup truck, a 33-year-old man from East Harwich, was evaluated on scene but did not require any further medical attention.

Bourne Police said the crash was caused by a vehicle that failed to yield as it pulled onto the Sagamore Bridge northbound from Cranberry Highway, cutting off the pickup truck towing the trailer of cranberries. The pickup truck swerved in an attempt to avoid a collision with the vehicle that failed to yield, causing the cranberry trailer to jackknife into the box truck, which was traveling southbound. The impact caused the box truck to cross into the northbound lane, before crashing into the guardrail and coming to a stop.

Police said they are still attempting to identify the vehicle that caused the chain reaction accident. Anyone who may have seen the accident is asked to call Bourne Police at 508-759-4451.

A second, minor accident occurred on nearby Cranberry Highway on Friday morning, adding to congestion in the area.
