Schools Working to Close MCAS Achievement Gap

The chief of communications for Boston Public Schools, Lee McGuire, joined NECN to discuss the most recent results of the Massachusetts standardized test.

While more students are passing the MCAS, some schools still have room for improvement.

The chief of communications for Boston Public Schools, Lee McGuire, joined NECN to discuss the most recent results of the Massachusetts standardized test.

"There are a couple of schools that are what we call 'turn around schools,'" McGuire said. "About a third of our students are in schools that were really working to improve right now. About four years ago, we got a law passed through the state legislature that gave us a lot more authority to improve those schools. Where we're doing it, it's working and now the state is letting us unlock these new authorities in even more schools."

McGuire says that early, third grade literacy improved by four points this year. He says that their goal is to close the achievement gap, which is what is happening with that specific test.
