Severe Thunderstorms Causing Flooding, Road Closures

A cold front pushing in from New York will trigger a few strong to severe thunderstorms across New England on Tuesday.

Severe thunderstorm warnings and flood warnings are in effect for Hampden, Hampshire and Worcester counties in Massachusetts, and Cheshire, Grafton, Hillsborough, Merrimack and Sullivan counties in New Hampshire.

Localized flooding caused Bridge Street to close in Richmond, Vermont. Richmond Police say flooding is also impacting East Main Street and Dugway Road. In addition, flooding caused Route 2 in Jonesville and Bolton Valley Access Road  in Bolton to close, according to the National Weather Service.

Brief, but strong and potentially damaging winds, isolated dime to quarter size hail and locally heavy downpours are the main concerns with any storm that develops. Ahead of these storms, the wind picks up and gusts from the southwest at 30 to 40 mph during the afternoon with scattered showers. Stable marine air will likely help the Cape and the Islands to miss out on most of this activity.

The biggest uncertainty is the instability potential due to abundant cloud cover, since the more breaks of sunshine we see in the next few hours, the higher the possibility there is of these storms strengthening.
