Sharks Coming Closer to Shore on Cape Cod

Great white sharks are heading closer to the shores of Cape Cod.

According to the Cape Cod Times, researches came across 23 great white sharks from Chatham to Orleans on Monday- three of which were off Nauset Beach. With numbers increasing, sharks have been spotted cruising in shallow waters closer to shore, prompting the closure of some of the Cape's most popular beaches.

The increase in sightings has prompted officials to rethink how they protect the public. Orleans' Nauset Beach supervisor Bob Bates says his department is looking into several solutions, including higher towers to give lifeguards a better view of the water, more signs with shark information, flying the purple flag used by lifeguards after a shark sighting, or maybe even employing a spotter plane.

No shark attacks have been reported on the Cape this season.
