Sheriff's K-9 Struck by Car, Killed

The Orleans County Sheriff's Department in Vermont says Kilo was hit while off-duty with his handler.

Vermont law enforcement officials are mourning the death of a K-9 officer that was struck and killed by a car Sunday in Derby.

According to the Orleans County Sheriff's Department, Kilo was with his handler when he was hit on Route 105 around 1 p.m. He was off-duty at the time.

The German shepherd died at the scene of the crash.

Kilo and his partner, Deputy Tyler Jacobs, had just finished half of a six-week class for drug detection. According to the department, Kilo was one of the top dogs in the class.

Officials say Kilo had been with the department since he was an 8-week-old puppy in August of 2014.

The crash occurred just two days after another tragic accident that killed a K-9 in Palmer, Massachusetts.
