It has been six months since the Government Center MBTA station in Boston closed for a much needed upgrade.

It won't reopen until the spring of 2016, but NECN's Steve Aveson got a sneak peek behind the scenes.

Demolition of the old site is complete, and construction of the new site is ready to begin.

A 40-foot structure can be seen rising up on City Hall Plaza. Engineers call that the head, and it will bring light to subway riders in just 18 months. There will also be two new escalators, and two new elevators.

This will help riders with disabilities.

The budget currently stands at $82 million. The station will reopen in the spring of 2016, with all of the work completed by the fall of 2016.
