Somerville, Cambridge, Massachusetts, Team Up to Help Get Green Line Project Back on Track

Somerville and Cambridge are offering $75 million to help get the MBTA's stalled Green Line extension project up and running.

In a joint statement Thursday, Cambridge City Manager Richard Rossi and Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone said they're making the offer to help the state close a funding gap.

Under the proposal, Somerville - which would enjoy the bulk of the extension - would kick in $50 million and Cambridge - which would get a new Lechmere Station - would contribute $25 million.

The offer comes ahead of a meeting Monday by the state transportation board and the MBTA's control board about possible modifications to the extension.

Officials put the project on hold last year after new cost estimates put the price tag up to $1 billion higher than earlier projections.
