Specter of Violence Hangs Over Caribbean Festival

Cultures united Saturday at the parade during the Caribbean Festival in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood.

Plenty of music and wild costumes flooded Warren Street.

While some are dancing to Caribbean beats, four people are recovering from gunshots. Overnight, multiple shootings took place on Boston's streets, with one person left dead on Crescent street.

"The regular Caribbean parade is great. It's the senseless violence from about 2 in the morning till 7 a.m., traditionally, where we've had the major problems," said Boston Police Commissioner William Evans.

Just last year, 26-year-old Dawnn Jaffier's life was taken at the festival. She was an innocent by stander preparing to dance in the parade. Saturday, a 27-year-old man joins the list of people slain during the celebrations.

Mayor Marty Walsh wants the community to help end the violence for the rest of of the celebrations.

"Any parents out there, I mean, keep an eye on your kids," said Walsh. "Because there's one young man that's not going home from last night."

And while everyone is enjoying the Caribbean Fest, Boston officials are asking people to come up with tips or any information that could lead to an arrest in the shooting.
