State Drops Charges Against Firefighter Accused of Domestic Violence, Kidnapping

Massachusetts has dropped charges against a Newton firefighter accused of kidnapping and attacking his ex-girlfriend.

Thirty-three-year-old Lee Gilliam had been held without bail after being arrested last week for an incident in which he allegedly punched a woman repeatedly, knocked her unconscious, took her to his apartment and threatened to kill her.

According to Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan, the state filed a Noelle Prosequi, saying Wednesday that there was not enough evidence to pursue a case.

"Based on an assessment of the present state of evidence, the Commonwealth has now determined that it cannot sustain its burden of proof," the state said in a statement. "Should the state of the evidence change, the Commonwealth will refile charges."

The 21-year-old victim described the gruesome details of the alleged attack to necn's Glenn Marshall last week, saying that because of his position with the fire department, nothing would happen to him if she told anyone.

Newton Fire had placed Gilliam on paid administrative leave. The department could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday night.
