Police ID Stratford Officers Who Shot at Man Who Opened Fire on Officers

State police are investigating after two Stratford police officers shot at a man who opened fire on them Wednesday morning.

Stratford police said they responded to Russian Beach in the Lordship section of town at 4:45 a.m. to check on reports of a man with a gun. When they arrived, 40-year-old Timothy Johnson, of Stratford, fired at police officers and the two officers shot back, hitting Johnson, according to police.

Johnson fell to the ground after he was shot, according to Statford police. He was treated at the scene and transported to Bridgeport Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

Police identified the officers as 52-year-old Brian McCarthy, a 26-year-veteran, joined the Stratford Police Department in October 2013 after 24 years with the Woodbridge Police Department and 25-year-old Louis Arbelo, a two-year veteran of the Stratford Police Department.

Both fired at least one round from their department-issued guns and at least one round hit Johnson, police said.

Both have been placed on paid administrative duty during the investigation, following department protocol.

The State Police Western District Major Crime unit and Fairfield Judicial District are investigating.
