State Trooper Delivers Baby on Massachusetts Turnpike

A Massachusetts State Police trooper delivered a baby on the Massachusetts Turnpike Saturday night.

A state police trooper delivered a baby on the Massachusetts Turnpike Saturday night.

Police responded to a call that a 32-year-old Fitchburg woman was in labor around 7:53 p.m. She had pulled her car over on Interstate 90 eastbound in Framingham.

When Trooper Paul Copponi arrived, he found the woman in the driver's seat with three other children in the vehicle. As Trooper Copponi reassured the woman that EMS was on the way, the baby began to crown.

Trooper Copponi began supporting the baby's head. Framingham Fire and EMS arrived on scene and the baby boy was born just moments later. Police say a member of Framingham EMS cut the umbilical cord and quickly boarded the mother and the baby into the ambulance.

Meanwhile, Trooper Daniel Mahoney arrived and took care of the three young passengers. The mother, baby, and three children were transported to Metro West Framingham Hospital.
