Still No Cost Estimate for MBTA Green Line Expansion

The project, which expands the Green Line into Somerville and Medford, was originally estimated at $1.99 billion

The costs of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Green Line expansion project keep growing and officials do not have a clear estimate how much the overall project will cost, according to the Boston Globe.

The project, which expands the Green Line into Somerville and Medford, was originally estimated at $1.99 billion, but that number has since increased to around $3 billion, according to a consultant.

Consultants said contributing factors to the increased costs included understaffing and inability to secure a reliable budget.

They added that the increased costs should have been anticipated back in 2012.

The MBTA is already considering fare hikes and cutting some services as a way to close the growing budget gap.
