Striking FairPoint Workers to Rally at Statehouse

Striking workers of FairPoint Communications are going to be holding a rally at the Vermont Statehouse in Montpelier.

Striking workers of FairPoint Communications are going to be holding a rally at the Vermont Statehouse in Montpelier.

The noon rally Thursday is designed to highlight the strike of 1,700 FairPoint workers from Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine that began Oct. 17.

The most recent meeting between union representatives and the company earlier this week failed to make any progress.

FairPoint contends the old contract was out of sync with industry norms. It imposed its final contract offer in late August, cutting pension benefits and increasing health care costs of workers.

The union says the proposed cuts would make it impossible for them to provide quality service in northern New England.
