A Taunton, Massachusetts, man has pleaded guilty to causing a car crash that led to the premature birth of a baby who died within minutes.

David Boulter was sentenced to two months in jail with the remainder of a two-year sentence suspended for five years after pleading guilty to driving negligently so as to endanger. In exchange, prosecutors did not pursue a vehicular homicide charge.

Authorities say Boulter fell asleep at the wheel in Norton in May 2012 and struck another vehicle head on.

A woman in the vehicle was six months pregnant. She underwent emergency surgery and gave birth to a boy who died within 12 minutes.

Boulter's attorney tells The Taunton Daily Gazette his client is remorseful and the settlement is in the best interest of all parties.
