Police Investigating 1st Homicide of 2016 in Springfield, Massachusetts

Police have released the identity of a 71-year-old man who was shot and killed in Springfield's North End, the city's first homicide of the year.

Officers were dispatched to Brookline Avenue around 5:45 p.m. Monday for reports of a shooting.

Police found Juan Zayas on his driveway with a gunshot wound.

Witnesses told The Springfield Republican they heard screaming but no shots.

Other witnesses tell westernmassnews.com that Zayas was ambushed as he and his wife got out of their car.

State police assisted Springfield officers at the scene along with an official wearing an FBI Gang Task Force jacket.

There's no word on arrests.

A second shooting occurred about a mile away at 7 p.m. Monday. The victim was taken to Baystate Medical Center with serious injuries.
