Suspect in Cancer Patient Donation Jar Theft Arrested

Police say a suspect accused of being involved in the theft of a donation jar meant for a family whose child is battling cancer has been arrested

Police in New Bedford, Massachusetts, say a suspect accused of being involved in the theft of a donation jar meant for a family whose child is battling cancer has been arrested.

Veronica Mello, 32, turned herself in to police Tuesday afternoon.

She is accused of being involved in the theft at the downtown station on Pleasant.

Donation jars were set up around the city for four-year-old Haylie Jansen, who was diagnosed in January with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Her mother left her job to provide care.

The donation money was meant to help the family pay their bills.

Mello is expected to be arraigned Wednesday morning.
