Suspects in Court After Woman Killed by Stray Bullet

Police say three men were in a second floor apartment on Exchange Street in Lawrence, Massachusetts, when a gun was fired, hitting and killing Mirna Rivera who was sleeping in the apartment downstairs.

Prosecutors say police found evidence of the shooting.

"They immediately smelled burnt gun powder. Inside the apartment, they found a first-floor bedroom with a hole in the rug there," Karen Hopwood, the Essex County Assistant District Attorney said.

Police say they found drugs and drug paraphernalia, in addition to a rifle outside the building. Each of the men is facing several charges connected to that.

The men's lawyers each said there's not evidence to show their client pulled the trigger.

Rivera's family was emotional in court and back in her neighborhood, those who knew her are still trying to make sense of the tragedy.

"She had a daughter, granddaughter, she was a quiet person didn't bother anyone, definitely didn't deserve what happened," Frank Gaton said.
