Teacher Accused of Giving Painkillers to Student Due in Court

A Massachusetts high school teacher and swim coach accused of giving Oxycodone and Diazepam to a former student athlete in 2014 is expected back in court Tuesday for a pre-trial hearing.

Elizabeth Backler is accused of giving the drugs to a 16-year-old on the North Andover High School girls swim team to treat a shoulder injury.

At last check, Backler was on paid leave from her job at the Amesbury Academy Charter School, where she took a job this school year after her contract at North Andover High School was not renewed.

Backler has pleaded not guilty. She was released on personal recognizance back in September and ordered to stay away from the high school and the victim, and ordered to have no unsupervised contact with anyone under 18.
