Teen Drowns After Canoe Capsizes in New Hampshire Pond

Police say alcohol and drugs "appear to be contributing factors"

Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal canoeing accident as a teenager who was vacationing in the mountains with friends.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department says Syel Mansoor Bilal and three friends were canoeing on a pond in Stark just before 1 a.m. Saturday when the canoe capsized and Bilal drowned. The three others safely swam to shore. They have not been identified.

Rescue crews found Bilal's body around 8 a.m.

The 17-year-old recently moved to Bedford from Pinckneyville, Illinois.

Police say alcohol and drugs "appear to be contributing factors," but the matter is still under investigation.

The group was canoeing on North Pond, located in a mountainous area of northern New Hampshire.
