Teen in Induced Coma After School Bus Accident

Police say a 15 year old was hit by a school bus on Linwood Avenue in Northbridge, Massachusetts, on Wednesday

A 15-year-old boy is in critical condition after being hit by a school bus Wednesday in Northbridge, Massachusetts.

The Northbridge Police Department said Thursday the boy is in stable condition in an induced coma.

The bike he was riding, his sneakers, and a notebook was left laying in the road as police investigated the accident through Wednesday afternoon. According to police, it happened around 2 p.m. as the freshman was riding home from Northbridge High School.

"The boy was on a bicycle. He came right out of the parking lot right over here without stopping and directly right in front of the bus," Northbridge Police Lt. Timothy Labrie said.

The empty school bus was on it's way to pick up students at the nearby middle school, when the 84-year-old driver says the boy on the bike came out of nowhere. He tried to stop, but hit the boy square on.

"The boy just darted out right in front of him, he said," Lt. Labrie said.

Police say the bus was going about 30 miles an hour down Linwood Avenue. The teen was unconscious when paramedics arrived and was thrown from his about 40 feet from the impact. Police say he wasn't wearing a helmet at the time.

"It's a busy street there in the school hours, but you know, there's plenty of traffic, people coming to pick up their kids, kids on activities, just unfortunate," Dick Auger, a neighbor, said.

"Obviously I don't want to see anybody get hurt or anything, especially when he goes to my school, at least from my town," Dan Menard, a high school student, said.

Bystanders, including school nurses, rushed to the injured teen's aid, doing what they could as they waited for paramedics. Police say their quick action made a big difference.

"It was a great help. You can't give enough credit to the school nurses. I don't know their names, but I will find them tomorrow and thank them. They were excellent. The passerbys, I was told there was also a nursing student that happened to be going by that stopped to help, too, and we'll hopefully get her name and reach out to them and thank them also," Lt. Labrie said.
