Teen, Man Killed in Car-Bicycle Collision

Police believe excessive speed caused the crash

Police say a 17-year-old driver and a bicyclist were killed in a collision in Hinesburg, Vermont.

The car driver was identified Sunday as Joseph Marshall of Hinesburg, a senior at Champlain Valley Union High School. The bicyclist was identified as 47-year-old Richard Tom of Hinesburg.

Police said both were traveling south on Vermont 116 when Marshall lost control of the car at a curve in the road. He then went onto the shoulder, striking Tom. Both went down an embankment where the car struck a tree and the driver was ejected.

Both victims were declared dead at the scene of the crash.

Police believe excessive speed caused the crash.

There were no passengers in the car.
