Police have arrested a Methuen man in connection with the violent sexual assault of a teenager on Sunday.
Kevin Suarez, 31, was arrested on Monday and charged with assault with intent to rape. He was scheduled to be arraigned on Monday afternoon in Lowell District Court. Police said additional charges are probable.
Early Sunday morning, police say an 18-year-old woman was attacked from behind when she was walking on Middlesex Street toward Branch Street in Lowell. According to police, the suspect dragged her into an alley and knocked her to the ground.
A witness confronted the attacker after hearing the victim scream, and she was able to get away, running to the fire station. She is being treated at Lowell General Hospital.
The suspect fled on foot.
