A Connecticut artist's handmade way to memorialize the victims of the Sandy Hook massacre is on view this weekend in Vermont.
Liz Alpert Fay, a textile artist from Sandy Hook, used traditional rug-hooking techniques to create a large tribute to the 20 children and six adults killed in the 2012 shooting spree inside Sandy Hook Elementary.
Alpert Fay's is one of 400 pieces in the rug and fiber arts show called Hooked in the Mountains. It runs through Sunday afternoon at the Champlain Valley Expo in Essex Junction.
The back of the work shows a wall-sized tree and the silhouette of an assault rifle, but the focus of the piece is front and center: emphasizing 26 flowers, one for each victim.
The artist said she hopes her work conveys a sense of hope and remembrance.
"We have become so numb with everything that is happening in the news every day, I thought it might be interesting and enlightening to people to know what it really felt like to go through this," Alpert Fay told necn affiliate NBC 5.
"The people that we invite — the featured artists — like Liz Alpert Fay, are invited to come to inspire us to push ourselves even further in this craft that is a true art; fine art made with this beautiful medium," added Jennifer Davey of the Green Mountain Rug Hooking Guild.
