For those of us who crave to ski and snowboard, the best day of the year is opening day. Getting on the lift is exhilarating.
But the ride down used to be limited to a few narrow slopes and some walking, but not anymore. Top-to-bottom skiing on opening day is almost commonplace.
Jeff Wise of Stowe Mountain Resort in Vermont said, “What that’s changed at Stowe is that we’ve opened early, with more trails than ever and our signature trails.”
Wise says advancements in snow-making technology have made his life easier.
He said that the difference between today and five years ago is that there was no technology for top-to-bottom snow-making.
HKD Snowmakers is a New England company leading the way in supplying snow to mountains when the weather does not.
President Charles Sentry says the company has a couple of patented snowmakers that use compressed air and water very efficiently.

He said the trickiest part is to make snow in the warmest possible temps, because it extends the use of the snowmakers.
