Friends and family say 23-year-old Adam Sproul, who was seriously injured in a tire explosion accident at a New Hampshire Sears last weekend, continues to improve in the hospital.

Police say Sproul and a mechanic, 22-year-old Justin Almon of Sandown, New Hampshire, suffered head injuries when a truck tire exploded at the Sears Auto Center at the Mall at Rockingham Park in Salem, New Hampshire.

Almon was pronounced dead at Parkland Medical Center, and Sproul remains at Boston Medical Center. According to his aunt, he has been taken out of Intensive Care and is starting to eat again.

"We are grateful that Adam is doing better, but we send our condolences to [Almon's] family," said Sproul's aunt in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, who did not want to be identified.

Almon has one child, according to his stepbrother. He is a graduate of Southern Maine Community College, where he met Sproul and became friends.

Sproul went on to study at the Landing School in Arundel, Maine. His former roommate and classmate, Jason Maddocks, said he has been in close contact with Sproul's family in the hospital.

"I know Adam is pulling through," said Maddocks. "Everyone really cares [about him], especially in Boothbay."

Another friend from the Landing School, Jack Drukker, said the small school is in shock. "Freak accidents do happen," said Drukker, "but it was a little unreal. It was definitely scary."

The accident is still under investigation.
