Tobin Bridge Toll Evaders Offered Amnesty Program

The Tobin Bridge launched an all-electronic tolling system last July, eliminating the need for cash

Massachusetts transportation officials are offering an amnesty program for drivers who haven't paid fines assessed for failing to pay tolls to cross the Tobin Bridge.

State Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollack says starting Monday and running through the end of June, late fines will be waived as long as drivers pay their outstanding tolls.

Pollack says some people have incurred late fines amounting to thousands of dollars.

The Tobin Bridge launched an all-electronic tolling system last July, eliminating the need for cash. The system employs technology that detects E-ZPass transponders, or for vehicles without transponders, captures an image of the license plate and sends an invoice to the address listed on the vehicle registration.

The state is also starting a new, less punitive, fine system.
