Trial of Abbot, Maine Man in Ex-Girlfriend's 2015 Murder Postponed

The court clerk says no new trial date has been scheduled. Jeffrey Toothaker, Burton's former attorney, says the decision will likely delay the trial for up to a year

The murder trial of an Abbot man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend last summer and leading police on what's been called the longest manhunt in Maine history has been postponed.

Jury selection in the trial of 39-year-old Robert Burton was scheduled to begin Monday at the Penobscot Judicial Center, but the case was shelved as Burton seeks a new lawyer to represent him.

The court clerk says no new trial date has been scheduled. Jeffrey Toothaker, Burton's former attorney, says the decision will likely delay the trial for up to a year.

Burton in December pleaded not guilty to murder in the fatal June 2015 shooting of Stephanie Gebo at her Parkman home. He turned himself in to police in August 2015 following a two-month manhunt.
