Trooper Charged With Assaulting Girlfriend Released on Bail

A Massachusetts state trooper accused of assaulting his girlfriend this past weekend has been released on bail and ordered to remain under GPS monitoring.

Ayer District Court Judge Cesar Archilla rejected the prosecution's notion Wednesday that continuing to hold 45-year-old Robert Sundberg would "ensure the safety of the alleged victim."

Prosecutor Brian Doxtader argued that Sundberg abused his girlfriend for more than four years and has the potential to become combative "without provocation or warning."

Sundberg has been charged with assaulting his girlfriend in their Boxborough home before pressuring her to have sex with him.

Attorney Richard Rafferty maintained his client's innocence and claimed that Sundberg's accuser "knows what to do to get him incarcerated."

State police officials have suspended Sundberg indefinitely without pay.
