NH Trooper Injured in Crash

The icy road conditions reportedly caused the accident

A New Hampshire State Police trooper suffered minor injuries when her cruiser was hit by a vehicle that skidded on the icy roads on Tuesday morning.

The accident occurred around 5:15 a.m. on the Spaulding Turnpike southbound on the Newington/Portsmouth line, according to Lt. Christopher Vetter. He said Trooper Michelle Montville had responded to a 2-vehicle accident and was parked, sitting in her cruiser in the left-hand breakdown lane when vehicle headed south in the right travel lane lost control and came across all lanes of traffic into the breakdown lane, striking her cruiser. The cruiser then lunged forward and struck a vehicle that had been involved in the initial 2-vehicle crash.

Trooper Montville was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital with minor back injuries. No one else was injured in the crash.

One lane of the Spaulding Turnpike southbound was closed for about 45 minutes while emergency personnel handled the scene and state Department of Transportation crews treated the road.

Preliminary investigation shows the operator, Kirby Link of Newington, was traveling too fast for the poor weather conditions. The accident remains under investigation.
