Troopers: Driver in Fatal Crash Had Suspended License

Derek Knowles of Skowhegan was arrested on outstanding warrants when he was released from the hospital after the accident

Maine State Police say a man with a suspended driver's license was behind the wheel when a Land Rover crashed on the Maine Turnpike, killing a passenger.

Troopers say the crash Saturday in New Gloucester killed 40-year-old Anthony Vandyck of Fairfield, who was ejected through the sunroof window when the vehicle rolled over. He owned the vehicle.

Troopers say the driver, 35-year-old Derek Knowles of Skowhegan, was arrested on outstanding warrants when he was released from the hospital after the crash.

Steve McCausland from the Maine Department of Public Safety says troopers will consult with the district attorney on what additional charges may be filed against Knowles.

Knowles was being held at the Androscoggin County Jail on Monday; it was not immediately known if he had a lawyer.
