Troubled Psychiatric Hospital Closes its Doors

A Massachusetts psychiatric hospital cited for lapses in care has been ordered closed by the state four weeks after it was cleared to accept new patients.

The Department of Mental Health ordered Westwood Lodge closed Friday. Twenty adult patients were transferred to other facilities.

The department told The Boston Globe it is investigating "an alleged incident that recently occurred at Westwood Lodge."

Police and the district attorney's office declined comment. The hospital did not respond to requests for comment.

The hospital's children's unit was closed permanently in April when a review found children had been sleeping on bare plastic mattresses and injured during fights. One boy was given the wrong medication for nine days.

The adult units have been cited for being understaffed and for not properly monitoring patients.
