Truck Crashes Through Guardrail, Hangs Over Highway

A tractor trailer barreled through a guardrail and plunged down an embankment Saturday in Newton, Massachusetts.

"The driver knew, he said the off ramp just came out of nowhere, it does like a 180, he just took it too fast and went over the guardrail,” said Eric Larkin.

This truck crashed on the westbound off-ramp at Exit 16 of the Massachusetts Turnpike.

Eric Larkin heard it and ran to help, jumping over the fence to try to reach the driver.

"He seemed really confused, and you could tell his adrenaline was going too much - he didn't know what to do," said Larkin. "So I convinced him to kind of crawl out the backside of the truck."

A passenger had already gotten out. Neither seemed to be hurt.

Nearby residents of six apartments at the bottom of the embankment had to evacuate due to a concern the truck could roll even more. Police say about 50 gallons of diesel fuel was leaking.

"They just said we had to be out of the apartments, because of the fuel leaking, just for the safety of the houses," said Allyson Welch, who was evacuated.

It was all too much for Elizabeth Jenkins, who was looking to move into these apartments. She took the crash as a bad sign.

"We were thinking about safety," she said. "It’s ironic that it happened today."

The ramp opened up late Saturday afternoon and the residents were allowed back into their homes.
