Truck Hit by Commuter Rail Train in Wakefield, Massachusetts; Driver Injured

A driver was injured after a pickup truck was hit by an MBTA commuter rail train in Wakefield, Massachusetts on Thursday morning.

A medical helicopter was called to the scene, landing at Veterans Field.

Two surveillance camera angles at Young's Automotive show the crash — the gates come down, the truck going through them onto the tracks, as the train barrels into the vehicle and pushes it at least a couple hundred feet.

"I was crying and I was shaking and I was calling 911 and I just wanted to make sure he's alright," said witness Christine Pizzi.

The people on the train knew something had happened, but they didn't know what.

"We just felt a bump and then everything stopped," said Anne George. "Lights went out and it was just a bump for everybody. Nothing really."

Shuttle service replaced the commuter rail for some time after the crash, but by late afternoon, trains were running normally.

MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said truck's driver went around lowered gates at the railroad crossing and was struck by an inbound commuter rail train.

According to the agency, the train was going 29 mph, a mile below the speed limit. The operator, the MBTA says, did everything he could to stop.

No one on the train was injured. The truck driver's name and condition were not known.
