U.S. National Toboggan Championship Opening Cancelled

The first runs by tobogganers were supposed to happen Friday afternoon

The opening of the U.S. National Toboggan championships in Maine has been canceled.

The first runs by tobogganers were supposed to happen Friday afternoon before the event gets underway in earnest Saturday and Sunday at the Camden Snow Bowl.

But officials canceled Friday's runs because warm weather created concerns about thin ice on Hosmer Pond and about conditions on the 400-foot chute.

It remains to be seen whether the show will go on this weekend. Officials were discussing their options, including moving to alternate venue. The event has never been canceled in the 20-plus-year history of the event at the Camden Snow Bowl.
