Under Strike Threat, Vt. District Cancels School

South Burlington district cancels school and all related activities

The South Burlington, Vermont, School District, facing an expected teachers' strike, has canceled school and all related activities.

The district posted a notice to its website Monday afternoon saying school would be canceled Tuesday until further notice.

The local unit of the Vermont National Education Association says it has been urging the School Board to meet and try to work out a dispute over salaries and health benefits that has left teachers without a contract since July.

Teachers had set a strike deadline of Tuesday morning and opened a strike headquarters on Monday. School Board Chairwoman Elizabeth Fitzgerald says the board can't meet with teachers before Tuesday without violating open meeting rules.
