United States Postal Service Teams Up With Volunteer Elves To Bring Christmas Cheer

'Operation Santa Program' ships gifts to needy families

Dropping packages off at the United States Post Office is common around the holiday season, but one Massachusetts woman is helping the needy by shipping gifts to families she doesn't know.

"It's better to give than to receive," Marcelle Willock said.

Willock is taking part in the nationwide Operation Santa Program put on by the USPS.

"Ever since I was a little girl, my mom said we always had to help those who had less than us. I always grew up giving gifts at Christmas to the needy," Willock said.

Boxes of gifts will go to children who are hoping to receive Christmas joy from Santa. More than 400 letters were written and the USPS and volunteer elves who work together on getting the gifts and shipping them out.

"Unfortunately there are many people out there who are in need and fortunately for us there are many people out there who are looking to give back," said Michael Powers with the Greater Boston Postal Service.

In addition to Willock, hundreds of other volunteers will help make a child smile with a simple package, boxed with love.

"I've been blessed. You get to a point in life where it's just stuff," Willock said.
