University to Commemorate Challenger Explosion Anniversary

The shuttle exploded 73 seconds after lift-off over Florida and all seven crew members were killed

A Massachusetts University will be holding a special commemoration for the 30-year anniversary of the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger.

The shuttle exploded 73 seconds after lift-off over Florida and all seven crew members were killed, including New Hampshire teacher Christa McAullife.

At Framingham State University, where astronaut McAuliffe attended school, the Christa Mcauliffe Center, which bears her name, will hold a special commemoration at 5 p.m.

McAuliffe, a Massachusetts native, was the first teacher in space.

The McAuliffe Center opened in 1994 and focuses on science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Her son will be among those in attendance at the Kennedy Space Center's special ceremony Thursday morning.
