A Windham, Maine, mother and her son were hospitalized after their sport utility vehicle crashed through a guardrail along U.S. Route 1 in Bath and plummeted 30 feet onto the bed of a pickup truck.

Police say 37-year-old Melissa Medina and her 12-year-old son were transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland following Monday's crash.

Police Chief Michael Field says Medina's Mercury Mountaineer went over a concrete barricade on the two-lane bridge before landing on its roof on the bed of a Ford F-150 pickup truck below.

The driver of the pickup was uninjured, but the impact crushed the back end of his truck. He was stopped for traffic at the time of the accident, which occurred around 2:30 p.m.

Medina and her son suffered injuries that aren't considered life-threatening.
