Vermont Bans Outdoor Burning to Reduce Risk of Brush Fires

Vermont is banning the outdoor burning of brush in an attempt to reduce the risk of brush fires.

The state of Vermont is banning outside burning of brush to reduce the threat of fires during an extended dry stretch.

Effective 3 p.m. Tuesday, Forest Parks and Recreation ordered the state's forest fire wardens to stop issuing permits for outside burning. The ban will run through May 19.

More than 25 fires were reported across the state Monday.

Tess Greaves, the department's fire weather coordinator, says the small amount of rain received in some parts of Vermont overnight wasn't enough to eliminate the threat.

There is no rain in the forecast at least through the weekend.

Greaves says a statewide fire ban will make it easier for local fire wardens to deny people permission to burn brush.

The ban can be revoked if conditions improve.
