The Vermont Senate has voted to suspend Sen. Norman McAllister, who is facing sex charges.

Sen. Norman McAllister was arrested outside the Statehouse on May 7 and charged with three felony and three misdemeanor counts; he has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors say he sexually assaulted two women who were his tenants and employees on his Highgate dairy farm and solicited another for sex. One of his accusers worked for him for a time at the Statehouse as his intern.

The Senate Rules Committee voted 3-2 last month to recommend his suspension.

By a vote of 20-10, the Senate Wednesday suspended McAllister until after the criminal case is resolved. An earlier measure to postpone the vote until after the criminal case was resolved failed.

    McAllister has maintained his innocence.
