Vt. Man Gets 6 Months for Tractor and Truck Thefts

The U.S. Attorney's office says James Moorcroft was sentenced Monday. He's due to report to jail on Sept. 8 and pay $122,000 in restitution

A 50-year-old Vermont man is going to jail for six months after pleading guilty to federal charges he possessed eight trucks and tractors that crossed state lines after being stolen.

The U.S. Attorney's office says James Moorcroft was sentenced Monday. He's due to report to jail on Sept. 8 and pay $122,000 in restitution.

Prosecutors say Moorcroft orchestrated the theft of six trucks and two farm tractors he brought to the Brookfield farm where he lives from locations in Vermont, New York, Massachusetts and Maine. He then used them after removing the vehicle identification numbers.

Prosecutors say they believe Moorcroft tried to dispose of the vehicles after police in Connecticut checked one of the vehicles and found the VINs didn't match.

Moorcroft's attorney didn't return a call seeking comment.
