Vt. Town Loses Police Cruisers in Fire

Flames destroyed Thetford's three police vehicles

The small town of Thetford, Vermont, lost its entire fleet of police cruisers in an early morning fire.

The three cruisers were destroyed at about 2:30 in a blaze Vermont State Police investigators have labeled suspicious. They were parked outside the department office after personnel went home for the night, officials said.

State Police investigators were unable to immediately pinpoint a cause, Sgt. Steve Otis said, noting the investigation is active and ongoing. He said evidence was gathered and he hopes to hear from the public if they spotted anything out of the ordinary on Rt. 113 early Friday morning.

Thetford, a small town of 2,600 near the Connecticut River in Vermont's Orange County, is getting help from neighboring communities, including Norwich, while its officers have no cruisers, Norwich Police Chief Doug Robinson told NECN.

Reporter Jack Thurston is on the scene and will have a more complete report later today.
