The snow that made a mess of Tuesday morning's commute has turned to sleet and freezing rain, which made for a rough evening commute as well.
Snow will continue to fall, and accumulate, during the evening commute in parts of northern Vermont, northern New Hampshire, and much of Maine. That’s where air temperatures will remain well below freezing.
In parts of southern New Hampshire, southern Maine, and areas north and west of Boston in Massachusetts, temperatures will be falling back below freezing. That means anything that melted during the day or fell as rain will re-freeze and create very slick travel during the evening drive.

Some freezing drizzle is also likely, adding even more slick areas. Expect similar conditions in parts of northern Connecticut.
Spotty showers will turn to drizzle south and east of Boston, but temperatures there will remain a bit above freezing during the evening commute.
No major problems were reported earlier Tuesday despite the sloppy mix of snow, slush and freezing rain that fell during the morning commute.

Massachusetts State Police reported several accidents, including two jack-knifed tractor-trailers on Interstate 495 in Chelmsford and several minor accidents on Route 24 in the Brockton/West Bridgewater area.
Traffic was slow on major highways, but volume was light because it is school Christmas vacation week.
The chief of the MBTA says the mass transit system is running as normal after one early-morning switch problem was resolved.
There are no major power outages. Some flights at Logan Airport were cancelled.
The National Weather Service says areas west and north of the city could get up to four inches of snow.
Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker called it a "tier 1" storm, the lowest on a 5-tier scale.
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh is asking residents and commuters to be careful during the evening commute.
"While we have made unprecedented preparations for this winter, I ask for everyone to be extremely cautious if they need to drive this evening," he said in a statement.
