Walsh Raising Awareness for Childhood Cancer

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in Boston, and Wednesday, Mayor Marty Walsh, a survivor of childhood cancer himself, hosted an event.

"I didn't know what it was or what had happened or why me," said 17-year-old RJ Agostinelli, a cancer survivor.

Agostinelli was diagnosed with leukemia when he was only 10 years old. The West Roxbury resident and his family were at Boston City Hall for Walsh's event.

When Walsh was 7, he was diagnosed with lymphoma, requiring years of experimental treatments at Boston Children's Hospital and Dana-Farber.

"It gave me strength - inner strength - it comes out later in life," said Walsh.

In an effort to raise awareness about childhood cancer, the Zakim Bridge will be bathed in gold light during this first week of September.
