Widespread Phone Outages Continue

A top Vermont telecom regulator says the state's dominant landline phone company continues to be plagued by outages.

A top Vermont telecom regulator says the state's dominant landline phone company continues to be plagued by outages.

Jim Porter of the Vermont Department of Public Service says numbers of phone outages on the FairPoint Communications system, however, are not tracked as closely as those seen by electric utilities.

Porter says his department has received about 600 consumer complaints about phones being out of service since FairPoint workers went out on strike in October.

At Vermont Musical Instrument Repair in Middlesex, owner Jeff Vovakes says his phone has been out for nearly a week during a normally busy time of year.

Requests Monday to FairPoint for comment drew no immediate response.
